Shower floor installation. How to install mosaic tile on a shower floor. The mosaic tile in this shower floor is of a hexagonal shape, but the method I use here is also the same for a square mosaic tile installed on a shower stall floor. The reason a small mosaic tile is used on a shower floor with a center drain, is that when the deck mud was installed on the liner of the shower it was shaped to provide a positive pitch of a ¼” or more towards the drain. For this reason a larger tile cannot be used because it would be impossible to make the tile conform to the concave shape of the shower floor. A mosaic tile with all the spaces that the grout lines provide, make it easy for the tile to take the shape of the curved floor. First I dry lay the tile to determine how the tile will fit in the area of the shower stall floor, once the layout has been set I cut all the perimeter of the floor. The wall tile has not yet been installed in this shower so the tile does not have to be neat where it meets the backer board of the shower walls, because the wall tile will cover those edges. Attention must be given to the alignment of the tiles where it will be seen. With the entire field tile in place I then cut the tile around the drain to fit. Once this is done I pick up a section of the mosaic floor tile, and use a polymer modified thinset with a V-Notched trowel appropriate for the size of the tile, to install the tile on the shower floor. With the first section done I then remove the rest of the mosaic floor tile spread the thinset and finish the installation. The tile is then allowed to set for the appropriate amount of time, and then grouted.
