How to stop a shower screen from leaking.
One of the most common causes of a shower screen leaking is incorrect silicone. This how to video will show you the correct areas to silicone when installing a shower screen. This video applies to all shower screens whether it’s a pivot door, hinged door, quadrant enclosure, wet room screen or a sliding door.
The main thing you need to keep in mind is you want to make the area watertight and stop the water getting through anywhere so if you think logically it’s easy.
Step 1
When the shower tray has been installed silicone around it before it is tiled or waterproof shower board is installed.
Step 2
Once Tiled silicone round the shower tray and in each corner up the wall. This is to create a water tight seal behind the screen and around the tray. Leave this silicone to dry for 24 hours before installing the screen.
Step 3
When you have drilled & plugged the holes for the screen.
Silicone inside the holes and around them or alternatively you can silicone all the way up the back of the wall profile. Now fit the screen as per the manufacturers instructions.
NB. Drilling the tiles has create holes the water can pass through so you’re making it water tight again.
Step 4
Now you have fitted the screen you’re ready for the final stage of the silicone. Silicone the outside only in the following areas: -
1. Where the wall profiles meet the wall all the way from bottom to top.
2. Where the screen meets the tray.
3. 100mm / 4 inches up where the wall profile slots into the screen.
NB. You only silicone the outside of the screen most people if they have issues with a screen leaking end up putting silicone all on the inside and the outside as they think it will cure the problem. This is incorrect. Shower screens are designed so the water runs out of them so you only silicone the outside so the water runs back into the tray. If you silicone both sides the screen will fill up with water and eventually find and area to leak out.
