*****A note about this video! This was made specifically to demonstrate some ways that Old Masters techniques can be adapted for acrylic painting. LOTS of the advice in it doesn’t apply for oil painting, which is the media that would traditionally have been used. I am well aware that this makes it historically inaccurate, but the purpose is simply to adapt the techniques for modern materials! ****
My process for painting in the traditional atelier style used by Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Ruebens, and others whose production process would have included apprentices. This process breaks down the painting process into discrete steps: drawing, underpainting, then glazing. This method is economical in terms of paint, and nearly foolproof since the shading and colour are thought out separately.
This technique is good for both acrylic and oil, though this demo is in oil. It took about 5 hrs to complete, start to finish.
