How To Make Colored Glowing Bubbles

It’s easy to make glowing bubbles. It’s also simple to customize the color they glow.

All you need is some bubble solution or liquid dishwashing soap and any of several common glowing chemicals. The color of the bubbles depends on which chemical you choose.

If you break open a glowstick and mix a small amount of bubble solution in with the liquid, you get bubbles that glow by themselves. The advantage is that these bubbles truly glow on their own, plus you can make them glow in any glowstick color. The disadvantages are that the bubbles aren’t very bright and the solution only works for about 10-20 minutes once you mix it.

Another type of bubble that glows on its own is made by mixing glow paint from a craft store with bubble solution or dishwashing liquid. These bubbles are thicker than the glowstick bubbles, so they are easier to see. The glow is permanent and the bubbles can be made any color you want.

You can get brighter bubbles if you use a black light, which is a special light that gives off invisible ultraviolet light. Mixing tonic water with bubble solution produces bubbles that are bright blue under a black light.

The best and brightest bubbles come from mixing the ink from a fluorescent highlighter with bubble solution or dishwashing liquid.

Cut open a highlighter pen, squeeze out the ink and mix in bubble solution. The bubbles glow very brightly under a black light.

Yellow highlighters work best, but some other colors of highlighters glow too. Usually orange, red and green highlighters glow. Blue usually does not glow. Check the highlighter under a black light to be sure.

All these bubbles are non-toxic. The safest for kids are the tonic water and highlighter bubbles.
