How to fix a transfer case oil leak, Dodge Ram

This is the last of a two part video showing how I diagnosed and repaired an ATF oil leak between the 231 HD transfer case and the 46RE automatic transmission of a 1998 Dodge Ram. A link to part one is embedded in the first few seconds of this video, and here:

Both parts are lubricated with ATF+4, and the leak occurred at the weep hole between the two parts. Even in retrospect it is difficult to say which seal was leaking, or whether it was leaking at the bearing retainer plate. This type of leak may seem to be coming from the transfer case, since gravity and surface tension draws oil droplets down and back from the source of the leak. Ultimately I removed the transfer case and replaced the front seal of the transfer case, the rear seal of the transmission, and I refreshed an RTV seal at the front transfer case bearing retainer. Details of the repair are shown in a step wise fashion.

At the end of the video I describe how I will adjust the automatic transmission bands and change the transmission oil in a future video, link to come.

Special thanks to Sheriff420 for posting still photos taken during his repair of the same problem on the above forum.

This is a demonstration of amateur effort, offered in good faith for free but with no guarantees as to accuracy or safety. Auto repair education can be an inherently dangerous activity, even when best practices are followed. Any misadventure you encounter if you decide to repair your vehicle is your responsibility.
