  • How to Apply Exterior Caulking

    See All Caulking: https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/tools-hardware/small-job-home-repair-maintenance/caulking.html

Exterior caulking keeps drafts and rain from getting in around your windows and doors.

After a few years it can crack and needs to be replaced.

Here’s what you’ll need to do the job.

    •A putty knife or scraper

    •A stiff brush

    •Caulking applicator

    •Utility knife

    •Stepladder

…and exterior latex or silicone caulking compound

You can buy caulking compound that is coloured or you can buy compound that can be painted.

Start the job by prying away old caulking compound from around the door or window.

Use the utility knife for stubborn caulk. Cut it then peel away.

Remove loose bits of old caulk with a stiff brush so the new caulk has a good base to adhere to.

Cut the nozzle using the embossed lines as a guide.

The nozzle is tapered. The further back you cut it, the wider the bead of caulk is that is dispensed.

Cut the nozzle so that the bead created is slightly larger than the crack you have to fill.

The angled cut will help you hold the nozzle at the right angle to apply the caulk.

Next, puncture the seal at the bottom of the nozzle,.

Insert the tube of caulking compound into the applicator and you’re ready to go.

Start at the top of the window or door frame.

Squeeze the trigger on the applicator to start the flow of caulking compound.

Pull the caulking gun at a steady pace to create a smooth bead.

When you’re done, release the catch at the back of the applicator to stop the flow of compound.

To get a really smooth finish, wet your finger with soapy water to smooth out the bead of caulking compound.

Clean up around the window or door with a wet rag. Wipe the nozzle of the caulking tube and replace the cap.

If you’re using paintable caulk, let the compound set for the recommended drying time before painting.
