DIY Fabric Waterproofing Treatments

This is a video tutorial on making two different types of DIY fabric treatments to make cotton fabrics waterproof. As with any fabric waterproofing treatments, they are not permanent and will wash out, but can be applied to fabrics either before or after construction so it can be re applied. If you must wash the fabric after it has been treated, be sure to hand wash only.

The recipes are as follows:

SILICONE waterproof recipe – by WEIGHT

1 part 100% CLEAR silicone
4.5 parts odorless mineral spirits

In the video, I used the following weights:

Small clear 100% silicone tube which weighs 72grams/2.5oz
2 cups mineral spirits which weighs 340g/12oz

Mix both together until there are no lumps of silicone left. It takes about 5 minutes of stirring. Alternatively put ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to dissolve the silicone.

Spray or brush on fabric/item/clothing/footwear.

Treat with 1-3 coats and air dry between coats. When drying, move item/fabric around occasionally to prevent sticking to the drying surface.

BEESWAX waterproof recipe

White beeswax (yellow is fine too, but it will give a yellow tinge to the fabric)

Melt the beeswax in a saucepan over low heat. Once melted, use a clean brush to brush onto the fabric. Let the wax set on the fabric then use a warm hairdryer or iron (protect iron with baking/parchment paper) to evenly melt the wax into the fabric. Let the wax set again. To get the waxed canvas look, scrunch the fabric.
