  • Tunnelling Sydney’s new metro railway deep under the city centre is a step closer with a mega concrete factory in full production mode at Marrickville.

    The first of 99,746 concrete segments which will line new 15.5 kilometre twin metro railway tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham – including under Sydney Harbour – has come off the production line.

    Six concrete segments make up one concrete tunnel ring, which is installed underground by a tunnel boring machine as it moves forward. The tunnels will be lined with 16,451 concrete rings.

    More than 130 people work at the specialised concrete factory at Marrickville, producing one four-tonne segment every six minutes. When finished, it will have made enough concrete to fill 56 Olympic swimming pools.

    Most of the equipment at Marrickville was used to make the concrete segments for the Sydney Metro Northwest project, which opens to customers in the first half of next year.

    In the north west, 98,180 concrete segments were made to line the twin 15 kilometre tunnels from Bella Vista to Epping.

    Sydney Metro opens in the first half of 2019 in the city’s north west – 13 metro stations and 4,000 commuter car spaces. In 2024, Sydney Metro will be extended into the city centre and beyond to the south west – altogether delivering 31 metro stations and a new 66km metro railway.
