STORYLINE
Authorities in the northeast of Bosnia say they have called in the army, police, volunteers and even divers to help evacuate people from areas flooded on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Rescuers have evacuated about two thousand people from their homes in the city using rubber boats, officials said on Saturday.
They are also delivering food and drinking water as most suburbs have no electricity, water or phone lines.
Bijeljina resident Muhamed Hamzic said the flooding was a “total catastrophe”.
“It’s all 180 centimetres (six feet) under water. There is nothing more to say, it can all be seen,” he said.
Another resident Slavko Tikvesa said he’d been separated from his family by the floodwaters.
“The house is some 30 metres (98 feet) away and we can’t get to it. My wife and children were upstairs during the first flood and I spent the night here on the street,” he said.
Several Bosnian rivers burst their banks three days ago after heavy rainfall.
The river Drina that divides Bosnia from Serbia and Montenegro has caused most of the damage, forcing authorities in all three countries to evacuate thousands of people.
The water had started to subside on Friday but came back on Saturday in the northern part of the Drina valley.

Dams are built to hold back a body of water either to give a head of water to drive machinery, to allow water transport or to prevent seasonal flooding. They are used to create lakes, canals, mill ponds and reservoirs. However, once the body of water behind the dam is full, dams do need to let some water through. That’s normally via a weir.
They are often straight topped or can curve round.
