Sikasil® SG-500 S is a 2-component, high modulus, neutral curing structural silicone adhesive. This product is designed to be used in structural glazing applications.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

Sikasil® SG-500 S is used for structural glazing and similar high-demanding industrial applications. This product is suitable for experienced professional users only. Tests with actual substrates and conditions have to be performed to ensure adhesion and material compatibility.

Application Information

Surface preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and dust. Surface treatment depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is crucial for a long lasting bond.

Application

The optimum temperature for substrate and sealant is between 15 °C and 25 °C.

Before processing Sikasil® SG-500 CN both components have to be mixed homogeneously and air-bubble-free in the correct ratio as indicated with an accuracy of ±10 %. Most commercially available metering and mixing equipment are suitable. For advice on selecting and setting up a suitable pump system, contact the System Engineering Department of Sika Industry.

Consider that the B-component is moisture-sensitive and must therefore only be exposed briefly to air.

Joints must be properly dimensioned.
Basis for calculation of the necessary joint dimensions are the technical values of the adhesive and the adjacent building materials, the exposure of the building elements, their construction and size as well as external loads.

Tooling and finishing

Tooling and finishing must be carried out within the snap time of the adhesive.

When tooling freshly applied Sikasil® SG-500 CN, press the adhesive to the joint flanks to get a good wetting of the bonding surface. No tooling agents must be used.

 

Removal

Uncured Sikasil® SG-500 CN may be removed from tools and equipment with Sika® Remover-208 or an-other suitable solvent. Once cured, the material can only be removed mechanically.

Re-usable, usually metallic, static mixer can be cleaned with Sika® Mixer Cleaner.

Hands and exposed skin have to be washed immediately using hand wipes such as Sika® Cleaner-350H cleaning towels or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water. Do not use solvents on skin.

Overpainting

Sikasil® SG-500 CN cannot be overpainted.

DOWSIL™ 993N Structural Glazing Sealant is a two-part, neutral-cure silicone sealant designed for structural glazing applications. It offers excellent adhesion, strength, and durability, and is commonly used in the construction of high-rise buildings, facades, and curtain walls

Maintenance

There is no need for upkeep. Replace the damaged portion of the sealant if it becomes damaged. DOWSIL 993 Structural Glazing Sealant will adhere to cured silicone sealant that has been knife-cut or abraded.

Usable Life And Storage

Usable life: The usable life of DOWSIL™ 993 is typically six months from the date of manufacture when stored in unopened containers at or below 32°C (90°F) and in dry conditions. The usable life may be shorter if the sealant has been exposed to high temperatures or moisture.

Storage conditions: To ensure the best possible performance and shelf life, it is important to store DOWSIL™ 993 in a cool, dry place that is protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. Containers should be kept tightly sealed when not in use to prevent moisture from entering.

DOWSIL 993 Structural Glazing Sealant Curing Agent comes in a pail of 19 kg.

Limitations

DOWSIL™ 993 Structural Glazing Sealant is a high-performance product that offers excellent adhesion, strength, and durability for structural glazing applications. However, it also has some limitations that are important to keep in mind, including:

1. Not suitable for certain materials: It is not recommended for use with copper, brass, or galvanized metals, as it can react with these materials and cause discoloration or other issues.

2. Not suitable for some applications: It may not be suitable for use in certain applications, such as those involving continuous immersion in water or certain chemicals, or those subject to extreme temperatures.

3. Not paintable: It is not recommended for use in applications where it will be painted or coated, as the surface of the sealant can prevent adhesion of the paint or coating.

4. Not recommended for use in certain joint configurations: It may not be suitable for use in certain joint configurations, such as those with extreme movement, as the sealant may not be able to accommodate the necessary movement.

5. Not suitable for use in food contact applications: It is not suitable for use in applications where it will come into contact with food or drinking water.
