Cacti are a hot home décor trend right now and with a bit of creativity and some DIY ingenuity, we’ll show you how to upcycle your empty Tea Tree bottles into a toothbrush holder that will take pride of place in your bathroom!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- An empty The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Face Wash
- An empty The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Body Wash
- An empty The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Mattifying Toner
- Green and white acrylic paint
- PVA glue
- White scrap paper
- Paintbrush
- A water-based sealer
- Safety knife
- Rock salt
Here’s your ‘How-to Guide’ for creating this practical and pretty project:
- First, be sure to wash any product out of your empty bottles. Allow to dry fully, then cut the tops off both your facial wash and toner. These will form the branches of the cactus.
- Next, cut two squares into the side of your body wash. Make sure these are big enough to fit a toothbrush in.
- Using masking tape, cover the square holes with the tops of the two bottles.
- Now prepare your paper mache. Cut your scrap paper into small triangles. Mix one part water to three parts PVA glue. Soak a few bits of paper in the mixture at a time.
- Stick the paper onto the bottle until it is entirely covered. Let it dry and then apply a second layer.
- When it’s completely dry, paint with green acrylic and use the white paint for the spikes.
- Leave for an hour or two to set (you can use a hairdryer to speed up this process!) then apply two coats of water-based sealant.
- The final step is to fill with a few tablespoons of rock salt. This will ensure that any moisture at the bottom of the cactus that gets left behind by your toothbrushes is soaked up.
